Ashtanga Yoga is an ancient tradition, deeply rooted in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali; Guruji often referred to Ashtanga Yoga as Patanjali Yoga. Ashtanga literally translates as Eight Limbs, all of which serve to support each other. It is essential that Asana practice (the third Limb) is established in order to bring the body and sense organs under control; this also helps to promote the development of the Yamas and Niyamas.
Consistent Asana practice provides the foundation for the correct practice of Pranayama, which serves as the gateway to the following internally oriented limbs. ( For more on the Eight Limbs, please reference the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Chapter two - Sadhana Pada, or the portion on practice.)
Ashtanga Yoga is an ancient Vinyasa system, the breath being at the center of it. Postures are linked together precisely through the breath, which serves to regulate the Vinyasa in a clear and rhythmic manner. In concert with the Driste (gazing point) and the Bandhas (energetic locks), an intense internal heat occurs, eliminating toxins and purifying the body and mind. Correct breathing ( Ujjayi Pranayama) throughout the practice allows the blood to circulate freely, bathing the body and consciousness in Prana.
Through consistent practice, the body becomes light and strong and the mind clear and steady. The abundance that abides in our true nature (or Self) is revealed, informing our awareness with joy and vitality, and allowing for the attainment of our highest potential on all three planes of consciousness - physical, psychological and spiritual. In keeping with the Ashtanga tradition, we will observe Moon Days: there will NOT be practice on New or Full Moons. Please see our online scheduler for specific dates.
